That seemed to be the motto for FAU head coach Willie Taggart throughout the season as the Owls headed toward a losing record. Taggart brought in former NFL quarterbacks coach Michael Johnson to run the offense, and former Alabama defensive analyst Mike Stoops to call the defense.
With a record heading into its game against Marshall in Boca Raton, looking to extend its home winning streak to 12 games, the Owls needed one win to become bowl eligible. But a loss to the Thundering Herd started the downward spiral, resulting in a four-game losing streak and a losing record for the second time in four years.
Heading into his third year at FAU, Taggart is with no conference championships and an record in bowl games. Perry transferred to FAU later than anyone else and missed playing in the spring game.
That did not stop coaches from naming him the starter after competing with fellow transfer Michael Johnson and starter Nick Tronti. Not only did they play important roles during the Lane Kiffin years but they also were a major help in Willie Taggart's first season, which saw FAU make a bowl game. They'll look back and they'll see our program in five, ten years down the road and be able to say 'I helped put our program there. I love those guys. Again, they're awesome and if there's anything I can do for them moving forward, I will.
Wish them nothing but the best. And like I told them, we're going to make them proud. Following the game tight end John Mitchell, who found his way into the end zone in his final game, touched on his memories at FAU.
I wouldn't take it back for the world, I wouldn't do it any other way. And it's taught me a lot as a man, as a competitor, I've gained so much wisdom here. Just playing football, going to school, meeting people, It's been a blessing.
With the off-season officially here, FAU will turn their focus to improving the roster and replacing the production that leaves as the seniors depart. Though they do not count towards FAU's class, the Owls will also welcome five grey shirt players who may find themselves making immediate impacts during the season.
He also recorded 90 rushing yards and 70 receiving yards as FAU struggled to contain the dynamic running back. Senior wide receiver Willie Johnson led all receivers with five catches for yards.
Perry finished the game with passing yards and a touchdown. We left a lot out there. Marshall is now against FAU all-time and has won the last four matchups.
We got a chance to continue to get better as a football team and as a program. The Owls will travel to Norfolk, Va. Edrine wound up being targeted once in the game and finished with one catch for nine yards. Zuberi Mobley, another true freshman, also saw some playing time in the fourth quarter and finished with two carries for 10 yards. On defense, an injury to cornerback Romain Mungin forced FAU to experiment with some younger cornerbacks. Drawing the start was Justin McKithen , a second-year freshman.
The start marks the first of McKithen's career. True freshman Jayden Williams also saw extended playing time on the boundary. In the second half, Williams made a nice tackle on a Western Kentucky wide receiver, which prevented a touchdown.
Although the Hilltoppers wound up scoring later on the drive, it was a promising sign for FAU, who will be looking for players who can make plays in the final game of the season. This week, those errors continued to hurt FAU. In the first quarter, a yard kickoff return by Jakairi Moses put Western Kentucky at midfield. The short field possession led to a touchdown which put Western Kentucky up at the time. In total, Western Kentucky finished with 85 kick return yards on four kickoffs.
After going up in the second quarter, Western Kentucky would then attempt an onside kick.
